Olds & Son, when his son Reginald Olds joined him in the business. During the first quarter of the 1900s Frank Ernest Olds began making small bore trombones. The serial number, 789xx, puts it in the late 1930s-early 1940s. This Olds Recording trumpet is a great example of the design work of the southern California companys abilities at their height. It plays fine, just needs to keep the valves oiled up and playing. It comes with original case and new valve oil. The mouthpiece of the cornet (2013.46.29.1.1b) as a conical backbore and appears to be silver plated. The Ambassador model practically cornered the postwar student market. You can see the knicks and dings in the picture, and obvious wear from an instrument this old. The finger ring for the pinky of the right hand is silver. Olds Special Cornet 233xxx, and Olds Ambassador Cornet 433xxx, and a likely Martin Stencil trumpet, circa 1930s, silver with gold wash bell that appears little used.
The number is inscribed on the second valve. The cornet has inscribed at the base of the bell. The ambassador model is manufactured by F. The body of the cornet (2013.46.29.1.1a) is brass with a straight bell and three (3) valves with green felt pads.
